Museum of the Daily Culture of the 20th Century
First conceived as an archive to documented the history
of the German Artisan Federation (Deutscher Werkbund)
and the reformist movements of the early 20th century.
Later, the objective was extended to the study of history
and esthetics of the massive production articles. The
fast growth of the collection take the investigators to
create a permanent exhibition, obtained in 1986, moment
in which the archive was moved to the Walter Gropius building.
According to the concept of daily culture in which they
base the work, the museum is conceived as a sample of
elements of design, technology, systems of thought social
and art history, so it is inevitable the numerous meeting
points with other types of museums.
Unfortunately, the space limitations in the Gropius building
prevents a permanent exhibition, reason why they developed
the concept of impermanent exhibition: this is, a presentation
of the objects exposed that is changing in a kaleidoscopic
sequence, understood within a thematic perspective. The
specific work way of the exhibition consists of constructing
historical images by illustrating historical sequences
by different objects.
