Goethe Museum
Anton Kippenberg, a Leipzig publisher, dedicated 50 years
of his life to collect memorabilia related to the Romantic
German writer, Goethe. After his death in 1950, his daughters
settled down a foundation that continued the work of their
father. The collection was based on the principle corresponding
to the goethian concept of symbol. This is - according
to the letter he wrote to Schiller in 1797 - eminent objects
that, in a characteristic diversity, serves as representatives
of many others.
This means that each object, beyond its specificity, represents
the thought of Goethe and its time. Thus here can be found
currencies, medals, plates, porcelain decorated with scenes
of Weimar, many paintings of the places visited by Goethe
and busts of the contemporaries of the author with whom
he interchanged ideas. It also has several manuscripts,
letters, scores and books that belonged to Goethe.
