Lower
Saxony
Is, by extension, the second (state) länder of Germany.
Bigger than Switzerland, it occupies the Northwest of
Germany, between the North coast - including the Eastern
Frisias -, and the Harz mountains, with the centre in
the city of Hannover. It’s here where the Altes
Land are, the greatest fruit trees extension of all Europe,
specially beautiful during the flowering of the apple
trees; the "humid triangle" between the Elbe
and Weser rivers mouths and the fishing port of Cuxhaven.
Lower Saxony has the greater network of bicycle paths
of all Germany.
Some historical interest cities are Hildesheim, Bardowick
and Brunswich, an important commercial city during the
Middle Ages. The two thirds of their lands are dedicated
to agriculture and cattle, although it has powerful industries
like chemistry and automobile. Hannover is one of the
economic centres of the country, now revalued thanks to
the celebration of the year 2000 Universal Exhibition.
It was totally destroyed during World War II. The most
emblematic buildings are the Opernhaus, of neo-classic
style, the Altes Rathaus and the Marktkirche, constructed
in the 14 Th. century with a tower that is the city symbol.
